In Kahikatea Room our children are aged 3 to 6 years old.
Teaching children the values of kindness, mindfulness, respect and love is important to teachers in Kahikatea Room and we strive to role model these values in all our interaction with tamariki. We place a lot of emphasis on being kind, loving and caring to one another.
The learning that takes place in Kahikatea is very much child led. Tamariki express their interests and passions and we support and facilitate their learning around their inquiries and curiosity. We feel this helps to build competent, capable learners who can express themselves and communicate well with others.
In this room there is a consistent focus on preparing children for their transition into primary school through learning to write, developing self-help skills and independence, and daily circle times to encourage participation in group settings as well as developing listening skills. Whanau who feel their child is not ready for school at age 5 are welcome to continue attending Manaaki until 6 years old.
We place much importance on connectivity to papatuanuku and the natural world. Having regular neighbourhood excursions to the farmlet, interactions with animals, adventures in the paddock and woods as well as gardening together. All this helps cement the connection and develops respect for our natural world and all living things.
We are blessed to have a large outdoor environment for tamariki that offers many opportunities for exploration, discovery, and physical play.
